Become a Member of KAOS

Kidlington Amateur Operatic Society was formed in 1977/78, and now has a membership of around 100 members. The aim of the Society is to give three performances a year:

The Christmas Charity Concert performed on two nights in St. Mary’s Parish Church, Kidlington, combines both traditional and modern music, carols, short orchestral pieces and a visit from Father Christmas!

The Spring Concert usually takes the form of a choral work. In May 2007 we performed The Kingdom by Edward Elgar with Woodstock Music Society in Oxford Town Hall, in May 2008 we presented a concert of 100 years of Broadway and extracts from Porgy and Bess and in 2009 our concert, in St. Mary’s, was John Rutter’s Psalmfest and a variety of other popular choral works.

For the Autumn Production in October we produce a full stage production over four nights at Gosford Hill School, Kidlington. Latest productions include Yeomen of the Guard in 2003, Guys and Dolls in 2004, The Mikado in 2005, Orpheus in the Underworld in 2006, HMS Pinafore in 2007 and Brigadoon in 2008. In 2009 we will be performing Fiddler on the Roof.

Various social events are also arranged throughout the year e.g. dinners, quiz evenings, theatre trips, treasure hunts, river trips.

Members pay an annual subscription fee, currently £50 and for those taking part in the Autumn Production there is an extra production fee of approx £25. There is also a small music hire charge levied for the Spring Concert where necessary. We rehearse on Monday evenings at Gosford Hill School between 7.15p.m. & 9.30 p.m. during school terms. As concert time approaches there are usually extra rehearsals with the orchestra. Although every effort is made to accommodate all those who wish to be on stage, numbers may be restricted dependant upon the dramatic and choral needs of the actual production. If you are in the show the rehearsal commitment is quite significant.

KAOS is a non-profit making organisation, but we do try to cover all our expenses and to this end, the annual subscription is reviewed annually. We also have the support of a number of Patrons but we do rely on members to sell tickets to all our concerts.

You are welcome to come along for a ‘Taster’ rehearsal to meet us and see if we are of interest to you. Please speak to Mary to arrange this. Applications will be considered at the next meeting of the committee, and you will be informed of their decision in writing.
